In 2000, as a part of the National Undoing Racism Initiative undertaken by the Nation League of Cities, the Lansing City Council approved a resolution establishing a Task Force Promoting Racial Justice and Unity in Lansing.
The task force, comprised of elected officials, community and educational leaders evolved in 2003 to be called the Mayors Initiative on Race and Diversity.
Under this new Initiative, six issues area teams were developed, Education, Communication, Housing, Faith-Based, Health, and Employers. Several recommendations were made as a result of several intensive meetings and training sessions. The recommendations are as follows:
1) The City of Lansing will continue its commitment to the eradication of racism.
2) The City of Lansing will engage regional partners in a training process to promote racial justice.
3) The City of Lansing will work with the broader Capital Area community.
4) The Initiative will conduct an annual report to the community.
In December of 2005 the group was recognized and sworn in as the Greater Lansing Commission on Race and Diversity.
